The Cathedral City Public Arts Commission has put out a call for artists to paint 23 benches at Ocotillo Park, located at 33300 Moreno Road. The project aims to add a colorful and playful element to the park, enhancing the community's experience.
According to the Chair of the Public Arts Commission, the goal of the project is to make the benches more unique and colorful, fostering a sense of pride and fun among residents. The selected artists will each receive a stipend of $500 and must provide their own painting supplies.
Applications for the project are due by May 31, 2024, with the review process scheduled to be completed by July 22, 2024. The City Council is set to approve the Public Arts Commission's recommendations on August 14, 2024, with the selected artists being contacted the following day.
Selected artists will have the opportunity to paint the benches at Ocotillo Park from October 11 to October 13, 2024, leading up to an unveiling event on October 19, 2024. The artwork proposals must be family-friendly and in line with the community's values, prohibiting any depictions of sexual conduct or illegal activities.
Applicants are required to submit their resume, a statement of interest in the project, examples of previous artwork, and a color sketch or digital image of their proposed artwork to [email protected] by the application deadline.
Eligibility criteria for artists include maintaining a high level of quality in past efforts, furthering the mission and goals of the Public Art Program and the City, and demonstrating an understanding of the site and community they will be serving.
By entering the competition, artists agree to conditions such as being 16 years of age or older, working on the benches at Ocotillo Park during the established timeframe, and acknowledging that the selected artwork will become the property of the City. Additionally, artists must be prepared to address any vandalism or damage to the benches during the display period.
