The Coachella Valley Public Cemetery District announced on Mar. 12 that it has secured $1 million in federal funding to repair aging roadways at the cemetery grounds and Veterans Memorial, aiming to create a safer and more accessible environment for thousands of annual visitors.
This investment is significant for families across the region who visit the cemetery, including those honoring veterans at the memorial. The repairs will address about one mile of internal roadways that have deteriorated due to age, weather, and regular use. The total project cost is expected to be $1.4 million, with federal funds covering approximately 70 percent.
“I’m proud to bring these resources home,” said Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D., “and I’ll keep fighting for investments that make life more affordable for working people.” Financial support was secured through Community Project Funding requested by Ruiz and included in the fiscal year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development appropriations bill.
CVPCD Board Chair Ernesto Rosales said, “The Board of Trustees appreciates Congressman Raul Ruiz’s support in securing this federal investment. These federal resources reflect a sustained effort by CVPCD to address long-standing infrastructure needs in a responsible way. These resources allow us to make critical improvements while helping keep costs down for the families we serve.”
General Manager Joshua Bonner added, “This road repair effort is about more than infrastructure; it is about the experience families have when they come to honor their loved ones. We believe our community deserves a beautiful, well-maintained cemetery and Veterans Memorial, and we are grateful for Congressman Raul Ruiz’s continued support in helping move this project forward.”
While Congress has appropriated the funds, CVPCD officials will work with federal partners over the coming months to finalize agreements and begin planning. Construction could start as early as late 2026 or early 2027 once timelines are set.
