Palm Desert High School students staged a peaceful walkout Thursday morning to protest ongoing developments regarding Roe v. Wade. School officials responded by calling a lockout on campus while the protest was taking place.
“Approximately 100 students peacefully walked to the quad (area of the high school) as a protest regarding Roe v. Wade,” Mary Perry, spokeswoman for Desert Sands Unified School District, said in a News Channel 3 article.
A peaceful atmosphere remained throughout the hour-long protest in favor of abortion rights, the article said. Prior to the event, student organizers had notified the school of their plans.
At approximately 11:30 a.m., the high school’s assistant principal sent out a call notifying parents of the protest, the News Channel 3 article said. The lockout meant that no visitors were allowed on campus while in effect, according to the article. Once the protest concluded, students returned to class.
According to a Desert Sun article reposted by Yahoo Sports, the protest was organized by the student-run Feminism in Action Club at the high school. In fact, the effort was entirely coordinated by students.
During the event, one student spoke out of a bullhorn explaining how it was their civil responsibility to ensure that politicians who support and protect safe and legal abortions are those who get elected, the article said.
