Continued detections of the West Nile Virus (WNV) in and around Mecca have led to the scheduling of aerial mosquito control treatments in the area. To date, five positive samples of WNV have been detected in the valley by the District, although no human cases have been reported in either Coachella Valley or across the state this year.

With no available human vaccine for WNV, residents are advised to be proactive against mosquito bites by wearing insect repellent. Greg Alvarado, Operations Manager for the District, warns that “warming temperatures and endemic virus detection create the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to spread viruses.”

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District plans to administer adult mosquito control treatments via helicopter in Mecca/Northshore. The application area is within the boundaries of Highway 111 (north), Avenue 73 (south), Buchanan Street (west), and Grant Street (east). Applications are scheduled between May 20th-22nd from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., weather permitting.

Residents can access updated application activities and routes on the District’s website.

WNV spreads when a female mosquito bites an infected bird, thereby becoming a carrier capable of transmitting the virus to people. While most infected individuals will exhibit no symptoms, others may develop fever, headaches, and body aches. In some instances, hospitalization may be required and death can occur in rare cases. Individuals exhibiting symptoms should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

To prevent mosquito bites:

– Avoid going outside around dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
– Wear insect repellent containing EPA registered ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535.
– Cover up with long sleeve shirts and long pants during peak mosquito activity times.
– Check window and door screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your home.

To deter mosquitoes around your home:

– Regularly clean lawn drains and check for water and debris.
– Inspect yards for standing water sources and drain water that collects under potted plants, bird baths, tires, and other containers.
– Clean and scrub pet dishes and water features weekly.
– Ensure swimming pools, ponds, and fountains have working pumps and are regularly maintained.
