The Coachella Valley Firebirds secured a 2-1 win against the Abbotsford Canucks on Sunday at Rogers Forum. The victory marks the team’s third consecutive win and improves their season record to 12-6-3-0.

After a scoreless first period, Ben Berard scored for the Canucks early in the second period. During a penalty kill following a tripping call on Jagger Firkus, Jacob Melanson initiated a rush that led to J.R. Avon scoring his sixth goal of the season and tying the game. It was also the Firebirds’ third shorthanded goal this year.

In the final minutes of regulation, John Hayden advanced the puck despite taking a hit, and Melanson found Ben Meyers at the top of the circle. Meyers scored with just over four minutes left in the third period, securing his ninth goal of the season and extending his point streak to nine games.

Victor Ostman made 25 saves for Coachella Valley, earning his fourth win this year as they outshot Abbotsford 27-26. The Firebirds went 0-for-4 on power plays but successfully killed all three penalties they faced.

The three stars of the game were Aku Koskenvuo (Abbotsford) with 25 saves, Ben Meyers (Coachella Valley) for scoring the winning goal, and Victor Ostman (Coachella Valley), who made 26 saves and improved his personal record to 4-3-2-0.
