September is recognized as Pedestrian Safety Month in California, with local authorities urging drivers to exercise caution and remain alert for pedestrians. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of taking extra precautions to protect people walking on area roads.
Data from the Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that 7,148 pedestrians died in traffic crashes nationwide in 2024. In California, pedestrian fatalities account for over 24 percent of all traffic-related deaths.
Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Hadeen stated, “Every step we take towards greater pedestrian safety is a step towards saving lives. We want to remind everyone that safety begins with you, whether you’re behind the wheel or on foot. Small actions, like slowing down, putting away distractions and yielding at crosswalks can make a life-saving difference.”
Officials note that pedestrians lack the physical protections available to vehicle occupants. An increase in speed from 20 MPH to 35 MPH significantly raises the risk of fatality if a pedestrian is struck.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office – Lake Elsinore Station will conduct targeted traffic safety operations on September 8th and September 15th. These efforts will focus on driver behaviors most dangerous to pedestrians, including speeding, illegal turns, failing to yield, and running stop signs.

The program receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
