Cathedral City is moving forward with the implementation of Measure W, following strong voter approval in November. The measure, backed by 74% of voters, aims to enhance emergency medical services, street paving, and recreation services through funds.
In terms of street improvements, the city has devised a five-year plan, allocating an extra $1 million annually for neighborhood streets. This initiative will work alongside existing funds from SB 1 state gas tax and local matching funds. In the first fiscal year 2025-26, projects will include grinding and slurry seals in the Panorama neighborhood and reconstruction on Corta and Alcita streets. The plan extends to include various neighborhoods over the next five years, with project specifics to be discussed at a City Council session on April 23.
Furthermore, Measure W facilitates the city’s integration with the Desert Recreation District (DRD). This move, authorized through service and tax-sharing agreements, will start on July 1. The DRD will undertake the maintenance of local parks like Esperanza and Ocotillo, and enhance recreation programming in the city. The annexation process via the Riverside Local Agency Formation Commission is set to conclude within six months.
The measure also addresses emergency medical services by providing funds for a fourth ambulance and six new firefighter-paramedic positions, which the City Council has recently approved. The fire department is in the process of hiring to staff the new ambulance starting July 1. Additionally, two more emergency medical dispatchers will be hired.
Finally, Measure W supports the development of a community recreation center. The city has called for proposals to determine suitable locations, with submissions due by May 5.
City officials anticipate these measures will significantly benefit Cathedral City through improved services and infrastructure.
