The Coachella Valley Firebirds secured a 4-0 victory over the San Diego Gulls on Saturday night at Pechanga Arena. Goaltender Victor Ostman recorded his second career shutout, stopping all 28 shots from San Diego. Jani Nyman contributed two goals, marking his third consecutive multi-goal game.
Nyman opened the scoring in the first period after receiving a pass from Logan Morrison. Tyson Jugnauth was credited with the secondary assist on Nyman’s sixth goal of the season. In the second period, Nyman scored again by redirecting a shot from Ian McKinnon, with Ville Ottavainen assisting.
Jacob Melanson, returning from the Seattle Kraken, helped set up Ty Nelson for another goal in the second period, increasing the Firebirds’ lead to 3-0. The final goal came early in the third period when Tyson Jugnauth scored just two seconds into a powerplay after Oscar Fisker Molgaard won a faceoff.
Ostman’s performance brought his win total to eight this season and marked his second AHL shutout. Both teams finished with 28 shots on goal. The Firebirds were successful on one of four powerplays and killed all three penalties they faced. The team now holds a record of 20-12-4-0.
The three stars of the game were announced as Tyson Jugnauth (goal and assist), Jani Nyman (two goals), and Victor Ostman (shutout). According to team records, Ostman’s previous shutout occurred on March 30, 2025.
The Firebirds will play their next home game against the Abbotsford Canucks on Sunday, January 18th for Kids Night at Acrisure Arena.
