Today, Congressman Ken Calvert introduced the Space Infrastructure Act, H.R. 1154, aiming to have space systems recognized as critical infrastructure by the Secretary of Homeland Security. The bill has garnered support from Representatives Lieu, Carbajal, and Fitzpatrick as original cosponsors. Reps. Calvert and Lieu also serve as Co-Chairs of the Congressional Aerospace Caucus.

Rep. Calvert emphasized the importance of this legislation: “The Space Infrastructure Act designates our space systems as critical infrastructure and takes appropriate measures to protect them.” He highlighted the increasing reliance on space-based systems for essential communication and economic functions.

Rep. Lieu stated, “From navigation systems to banking to communications systems – space is infrastructure.” He stressed the need for resources and attention towards safeguarding these assets through their designation as critical infrastructure.

Rep. Carbajal added his perspective on the matter: “Space operations are a critical part of day-to-day life in the United States – from communications satellites in orbit to the launch systems that put them there.” He expressed pride in supporting bipartisan legislation that acknowledges space’s role in various aspects of national life.

Finally, Rep. Fitzpatrick remarked on global security concerns: “As we confront an evolving landscape of threats from global adversaries, it is imperative that we adopt a forward-thinking approach to safeguarding our critical infrastructure in space.” He described the act as a vital measure for ensuring resilience and security within national space assets.
