Rhian Reyes, a graduate of the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus, had the opportunity to introduce former President Joe Biden at a White House event in Washington, D.C. This event marked the dedication of the Chuckwalla National Monument, which aims to protect over 624,000 acres of land in Southern California.

Reyes, who works as a campaign organizer at Audubon California in Palm Desert, was involved in the Chuckwalla National Monument campaign since its inception in September 2023. Her efforts contributed to the official designation of this monument. “Being asked to introduce President Biden was an incredible experience,” said Reyes. She expressed gratitude for her role and highlighted the significance of this milestone for her career.

The dedication ceremony brought together tribes, conservationists, policymakers, and environmental advocates. It emphasized collaboration between various groups to safeguard public lands across America. During her introduction speech, Reyes discussed conservation’s importance and how the monument would impact local communities.

Reyes reflected on her journey from being critical of Coachella Valley during high school to appreciating its natural beauty after returning from college in Washington. She now hopes that others will also recognize and cherish the region’s landscape through activities like hiking and camping.

Her education at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus played a crucial role in preparing her for such opportunities. As secretary of the History Club and editor for “History in the Making,” she developed essential skills for public speaking engagements.

Reyes advises students considering college to network actively and seize every opportunity available: “For any young person starting their career journey… you never know where it might lead.”
