California State University, San Bernardino (CSUSB) marked a key stage in the construction of its new Student Success Center at the Palm Desert Campus with a topping out ceremony on December 2. The event celebrated the placement of the final structural steel beam, signifying the completion of the building’s frame.

The Student Success Center is notable as the campus’s first state-funded building and its first new facility in 16 years. Attendees at the ceremony included university administrators, elected officials, community leaders, construction partners, students, faculty, staff and alumni. Many were invited to sign the final beam as a symbol of shared commitment to higher education in the Coachella Valley.

“We know that students’ needs will change over time, and therefore, we have a building which aims to serve them as their needs evolve into the future,” said CSUSB President Tomás D. Morales. “This wonderful campus exists thanks to the passion of the people and leaders of Palm Desert and the Coachella Valley. They have put their hearts, souls and dollars into building the campus that we see all around us.”

The project received partial funding from a $79 million allocation in California’s state budget approved in 2022 after advocacy by regional leaders and community partners. When completed in 2027, the 23,700 assignable-square-foot facility will bring together various student support services under one roof.

Features planned for the center include an advising and tutoring center, career center, expanded library with group study spaces, cross-cultural center, bookstore with food services, student health center and recreation spaces. The facility is designed to support up to 4,000 full-time equivalent students while providing flexibility for future growth.

Additionally, by consolidating services within this new space, about 10,000 square feet will be freed up across other buildings on campus—such as Mary Stuart Rogers Gateway Building and Indian Wells Center for Educational Excellence—for use as academic programs or classroom space.

“Today’s topping out is a celebration of progress, partnership and promise,” said Edna Martinez, associate vice president at Palm Desert Campus. “Each signature on that beam represents a commitment to the students we serve now and the thousands more who will follow. This center will be a hub for connection, wellness and opportunity, and it underscores our vision to grow this campus in ways that reflect the needs and dreams of our region.”

The CSUSB Palm Desert Campus provides undergraduate and graduate degree programs aimed at serving both students’ educational goals and regional workforce needs.
