California State University, San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus has received a grant from the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation to support its Nursing Street Medicine Program. This program offers community-based healthcare to unsheltered and underserved populations in the Coachella Valley.
The grant, totaling $88,013, will enhance outreach efforts, improve access to medical services, and provide clinical training for CSUSB nursing students. The Palm Desert Campus and the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation aim to address health disparities and expand care through this partnership.
“We are incredibly grateful for the support of the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation,” said Diane Vines, a nursing faculty member and executive director of the Nursing Street Medicine Program at PDC. “This funding enables us to deepen our impact in the community while preparing our students to lead with compassion, cultural competence and a commitment to health equity. This grant represents more than financial support – it’s a vote of confidence in our students, our faculty and our mission to serve. Together with the Desert Healthcare District & Foundation, we are building a healthier, more inclusive Coachella Valley.”
The program involves nursing faculty and students providing basic healthcare services directly in the field. Services include wound care, chronic disease management, glucose monitoring, foot soaks, behavioral health assessments, as well as referrals to primary care providers and community resources.
Clinics are held at various locations such as shelters, food programs, homeless encampments, senior housing, migrant worker locations and cooling/warming centers.
Students gain empathy and achieve clinical hours necessary for graduation through this program. Supplies provided include hygiene products, hand sanitizer, face masks among other items.

The Nursing Street Medicine team provides valuable services at no cost for those most economically in need. The program also increases registered nurses experienced in engaging vulnerable populations within the valley.
