The Air & Space Forces Association (AFA) of Palm Springs, in collaboration with the California State University, San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus, recently hosted the inaugural CyberPatriot Cyber Camp. This five-day event aimed to equip local high school students with essential cybersecurity skills and encourage interest in STEM careers.

Held from June 23-27, the AFA 2025 CyberPatriot Cyber Camp was a free learning experience introducing students to digital defense. The camp featured instruction, hands-on activities, and mentorship from experienced educators and cybersecurity professionals.

Key figures included Tony Della-Moretta, president of AFA Palm Springs; Jim McFarlin, vice president of education; Thomas Chapman, assistant professor of cybersecurity at CSUSB Palm Desert Campus; Jose Ramirez and Samuel Flores from the Information and Security Club at CSUSB; Ashley Sanchez-Solis, an incoming student transferring to CSUSB; and Dana Sanchez from Coachella Valley High School.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in interactive lectures and online learning modules. They completed exercises that challenged their critical thinking and technical skills. The program also introduced them to artificial intelligence’s role in cybersecurity defense. Students explored academic paths through CSUSB’s programs at the Palm Desert Campus and competed in a final competition showcasing their skills.

Chapman stated: “Our goal is to demystify cybersecurity and make it accessible.” He emphasized combining technical challenges with mentorship to provide students with necessary skills for success.

Della-Moretta remarked: “This isn’t just a camp — it’s a launching pad,” highlighting the opportunities available within cybersecurity starting locally in Coachella Valley.

The camp involved all three local school districts, private schools, and CSUSB Palm Desert Campus. It received support from grants by entities including the Palm Springs Air Museum and representatives from congressmen Raul Ruiz and Ken Calvert who addressed attendees.

By fostering curiosity and connecting students with experts, the AFA CyberPatriot Cyber Camp aims to prepare young individuals for future roles in digital defense.
