The Dr. Carreón Foundation has announced the opening of its scholarship application process to all qualified applicants of minority ethnicities throughout the Eastern Inland Empire. Students from Coachella Valley are particularly encouraged to apply.

According to a press release, the eligibility criteria for applicants included being a full-time senior in high school within the Eastern Inland Empire and Blythe regions or being enrolled full-time in college or a trade school. Candidates must maintain a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0 throughout their high school tenure and demonstrate good citizenship, leadership, and financial need.

Over the years, the Dr. Carreón Foundation has granted more than $2 million in scholarships to over 900 students. The year 2023 marked a record-breaking period for the foundation as it awarded nearly 100 students with approximately $270,000 in scholarships. Recipients have attended schools both locally and nationwide including College of the Desert, Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus, the University of Southern California, UCLA, MIT, and Harvard University among others. The foundation works in collaboration with OneFuture Coachella Valley (OFCV) to raise funds for the scholarship program; every dollar donated is matched by OFCV and the foundation itself to triple the donations.

As stated on its website, the Dr. Carreón Foundation offers scholarships of up to $5,000 to selected students. Its scholarship recipients boast a 90% graduation rate – the highest of any scholarship program in the area.

Dr. Reynaldo J. Carreón established the Reynaldo J. Carreón M.D. Foundation prior to his death in 1991. The mission of this foundation is to support initiatives that will lead to increased and enhanced educational opportunities for underprivileged youth in the Eastern Inland Empire.
