The Coachella Valley Firebirds secured a 3-2 shootout victory over the Texas Stars on Wednesday night at Acrisure Arena. The win marks the Firebirds’ 10th of the season.
John Hayden scored the opening goal for Coachella Valley in the second period, assisted by Ben Meyers after an intercepted clearing attempt by Texas. Michael Karow tied the game for the Stars late in the same period.
Texas moved ahead early in the third with a goal from Trey Taylor. In the final minute of regulation, with their goalie pulled, Tyson Jugnauth’s shot was redirected by Logan Morrison to tie the game at 2-2. Morrison’s goal was his tenth of the season and came with just 28 seconds left in regulation.
The overtime period ended scoreless, leading to a shootout. Oscar Molgaard scored for Coachella Valley, while goaltender Nikke Kokko stopped all seven Texas attempts. This performance helped secure an extra point for the Firebirds.
Coachella Valley went 0-for-3 on powerplay opportunities and successfully killed all three penalties against them. The team outshot Texas 43-29.
According to team information, “The Firebirds hit the road for a four-game road trip beginning this Saturday, December 5th in Abbotsford to face the Canucks. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. PT. Coachella Valley returns home on Wednesday, December 17th to host the San Jose Barracuda. Head to Acrisure Arena early for Happy Hour at the Oasis (90 mins before puck drop). Game time is at 6:30 p.m.”
