The Firebirds have moved past the rival Wranglers in the opening round, marking their third consecutive postseason victory against this team. As the Firebirds aim to return to the Calder Cup Championship Final for the third straight year, their next challenge is the Canucks.
This best-of-five series will begin at the Firebirds’ Acrisure Arena. These teams did not meet in the playoffs before, and their encounters this season resulted in three wins for Coachella, while the Canucks won the most recent match.
Abbotsford, affiliated with the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks, wrapped up their season second in the Pacific Division, thanks to a successful campaign where they ranked second best in the Western Conference with a 92-point tally. After struggling earlier in the season, Abbotsford saw a turnaround with eight consecutive wins in January. Their performance peaked in March and April with 13 straight victories and concluded the season strong with three consecutive wins.
The Canucks finished with a total of 241 goals, placing them fourth in the AHL, while their goals against stood at 204, ranking tenth. Their power play and penalty kill performances were moderate, and their considerable depth played a key role, with 15 players notching at least 26 points. With the NHL playoffs not in progress for their parent club, Abbotsford has a fully reinforced roster for the Calder Cup Playoffs.
Among their key players, Linus Karlsson split his time between NHL and AHL, achieving notable results at both levels. Max Sasson and Aatu Raty have also contributed significantly, with Arshdeep Bains leading the scoring for Abbotsford.
