The Imperial Irrigation District (IID) has announced the launch of a grant program aimed at funding tree-planting projects in public spaces. The Public Green Space Grant Program is open to cities, counties, special districts, nonprofits, and community-based organizations. This initiative seeks to mitigate urban heat, reduce temperatures, and enhance local communities.

Funded through IID’s Tree for All program, the new grant offers a total of $350,000 with individual awards up to $35,000. Applications opened on May 20, 2024, and are due by July 1, 2024. Projects must be completed by December 2, 2024.

“This grant is designed to create cooler, more livable communities,” said Matt Smelser, IID Energy Department Manager. “We encourage public entities, non-profits, and community groups to apply. Our goal is to foster partnerships that enhance the quality of life for all residents.”

IID Director JB Hamby emphasized the broader benefits of the initiative: “Tree for All reinvests in our communities, combats high summer temperatures, and beautifies our region. Trees naturally cool communities by reducing the urban heat island effect and combat rising temperatures naturally.”

Director Karin Eugenio added that planting more trees would have multiple benefits: “Planting more trees will make outdoor spaces more enjoyable, reduce energy demand for air conditioning, and promote energy conservation. It’s a win-win for people and our environment.”

Urban trees play a crucial role in improving ecological and social resilience by mitigating heat islands, enhancing air and water quality, increasing biodiversity, and promoting human health and well-being—benefits that are increasingly important as climate change progresses.

Eligible projects must include significant shade-tree planting to increase green spaces and expand healthy urban forests. Projects improving community areas or providing park or recreational benefits to underserved communities will receive additional points.

No matching funds are required; however applications with matching or cost-sharing funds will receive additional consideration from an IID grant review committee.

Since its inception in 2021 under IID’s Public Benefits Program, the Tree for All Program has provided thousands of new trees to residential customers within IID’s service area. The new Public Green Space Grants aim to extend these benefits to under-resourced neighborhoods.

Applications can be completed using the official IID grant application form available on their website at www.iid.com/treeforallgrants. Completed applications must be submitted by July 1 via email at [email protected]. For inquiries or further information contact IID at 1-760-428-3306.
