In a recent statement, Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein of Palm Springs addressed the controversy surrounding Section 14, where City funds were used to clear land occupied by individuals and families, including minority groups.

Mayor Bernstein acknowledged the wrongdoing and outlined steps the city plans to take to rectify the situation. He stated, “My colleagues and I recognize that City funds were used to clear land which housed individuals and families who were tenants on the property, including minority groups. We know that we as a city need to right that wrong and in today’s Closed Session we collectively agreed on a number of steps to accomplish that goal.”

One of the key actions planned is the construction of more affordable housing by contributing to a Community Land Trust. Additionally, efforts will be made to increase economic opportunities for small businesses in underserved communities. Mayor Bernstein mentioned, “We also agreed to focus our collective efforts to explore ways that we can increase economic opportunities; especially with small businesses in underserved communities.”

The City of Palm Springs is also considering the establishment of a healing or cultural center dedicated to Section 14, with plans to seek funding from various government entities. Furthermore, the Council will proceed with a historical context study and explore initiatives like renaming a community park, dedicating an art installation, and creating a Day of Remembrance.

Mayor Bernstein emphasized the commitment of the City Council to engage with Section 14 survivors and all residents of Palm Springs to address past injustices. He stated, “My City Council colleagues and I are committed to continuing the conversation with the survivors of Section 14 and all residents of Palm Springs as we work together to address the inequities of the past.”

Lastly, the City Council has instructed the City Attorney to address claims made by residents displaced from Section 14, indicating a comprehensive approach to addressing the repercussions of past actions.
