Temecula, Calif. – The Riverside Sheriff’s Office has launched this year’s Click It or Ticket campaign, which will run from May 20 to June 2, aimed at reminding travelers, especially Californians, to always buckle up and secure children in the right car seats when on the road.

Corporal Trevor Downs emphasized the importance of seat belt usage by stating, “Wearing a seat belt should be automatic for all drivers and passengers every trip.” The campaign involves additional officers patrolling to actively enforce seat belt laws, specifically targeting drivers and passengers who are not properly restrained.

Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveal a concerning trend, with nearly 12,000 people losing their lives in crashes across the country in 2021 due to not wearing seat belts. In California alone, 878 individuals killed in crashes last year were found to have not been wearing seat belts, marking a 12.3 percent increase from the previous year.

California law mandates that children must be secured in a safety or booster seat until they are at least 8 years old or 4 feet, 9 inches tall. Additionally, children under the age of 2 must ride in a rear-facing seat unless they meet specific weight and height requirements.

Funding for the Click It or Ticket campaign was made possible through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, courtesy of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For any media inquiries related to this initiative, the Media Information Bureau can be contacted.
