Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus recently joined hands with OneFuture Coachella Valley to award scholarships to the university’s nursing students.
Awards of up to $1,000 each to students in the campus’s Nursing Street Medicine program are the result of a generous donation from local philanthropists Mary Caldwell and Steve Weiss.
The Nursing Street Medicine program, headed by CSUSB faculty member Diane Vines, offers free health care to homeless, unsheltered and vulnerable people living in Coachella Valley, a recent release on the Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) website said. Students enrolled in the program at the Palm Desert Campus would be eligible for the award.
“OneFuture is committed to producing a high-quality health care workforce from within our local student population,” OneFuture Director of Development Paul Olsen said in the release. “As part of the scholarship program, OneFuture provides holistic student services to ensure students have the skills, support and networking opportunities that ensure their success in college.”
Olsen considers the support received by OneFuture scholars vital to their success.
“OneFuture scholars graduate at a higher level than their peers because they have this support during their educational journey,” he said in the release. “Investing in their future builds a competent health care workforce for our community.”
Through the Nursing Street Medicine program, students offer health care services as they accumulate clinical hours and service-learning requirements that go toward their degree, the release said. The program includes projects that collaborate with local agencies.
