Dengue cases rise in Southern California; residents urged to take precautions
Southern California is currently seeing an increase in locally acquired dengue cases. In 2024, Los Angeles and San Diego County Public Health reported nine human cases of this nature. Typically, most dengue cases in California are travel-related, contracted from mosquitoes abroad. As of now, Riverside County has not reported any locally acquired dengue cases.

West Nile virus detected in Indian Wells mosquitoes for first time in 2024
Mosquito samples from a routine collection site in Indian Wells, California, have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) for the first time this year. The sample was located near the intersections of Fred Waring Drive and Eldorado Drive. This marks the 182nd sample from the Coachella Valley to test positive for WNV in 2024.

Coachella Valley plans weekly mosquito control treatments to curb virus risks
The District will conduct weekly truck-mounted mosquito control applications in Coachella Valley, CA, to mitigate the risk of local transmission of mosquito-borne viruses. These treatments are scheduled for Saturdays from July 20th, 2024, through September 21st, 2024, between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m., contingent on weather conditions.

Positive West Nile Virus (WNV) mosquito samples continue to rise in the Eastern Coachella Valley, with 171 WNV positive samples detected year-to-date. In response, the District has scheduled truck-mounted ultra-low volume (ULV) applications from Monday, July 15 through Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile Virus in Rancho Mirage
Six mosquito samples from routine collection sites and extra surveillance traps have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) this week in Coachella Valley, California. This brings the total number of WNV-positive samples to 97 for 2024. One sample was collected near the intersection of Bob Hope Drive and Palm Crest Drive in Rancho Mirage, while additional positive samples were found in Thermal.

West Nile Virus detected in La Quinta and Palm Desert for first time in 2024
The detection of West Nile Virus (WNV) positive mosquito samples continues in the Coachella Valley. For the first time in 2024, mosquitoes from routine collection sites in southeast La Quinta and Palm Desert tested positive. The samples were collected from traps near Madison St. and Avenue 52 (La Quinta), Monroe St. and Ave 60 (La Quinta), and Fred Waring Dr. and Warner Trail (Palm Desert). Additionally, a trap in Indio at Jackson and Avenue 50 yielded one positive sample. Multiple traps in Mecca, Thermal, and Oasis also continued to show positive results this week.

West Nile Virus activity increases in Eastern Coachella Valley
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has detected additional West Nile Virus (WNV) positive samples in the eastern Coachella Valley. Samples from routine collection sites in Thermal and Oasis tested positive for WNV for the first time this year. Samples in Mecca also returned positive results. This week's findings bring the total number of WNV positive samples to eighteen for 2024, a significant increase compared to last year when no virus activity was detected at this time.

Mosquitoes from a routine collection site have tested positive for West Nile Virus (WNV) in North Shore near Vander Veer Rd and Avenue 73, marking the first WNV positive sample in North Shore this year and the sixth in the Coachella Valley in 2024.

Aerial mosquito control treatments planned following West Nile Virus detections in East Valley
Continued detections of the West Nile Virus (WNV) in and around Mecca have led to the scheduling of aerial mosquito control treatments in the area. To date, five positive samples of WNV have been detected in the valley by the District, although no human cases have been reported in either Coachella Valley or across the state this year.
