The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway operates as a self-funded entity that repaid private revenue bonds by 1996 (official website). It provides access from the desert floor into Mount San Jacinto State Park using what is recognized as the world’s largest rotating tram car (official website). The mountain station offers restaurants like Pines Café, observation decks with views of Coachella Valley and Chino Canyon landscapes (official website), museum exhibits about local natural history (official website), theaters showing educational films (official website), as well as hiking trail access (official website). Since opening in 1963 after innovative construction methods were used to build it across steep terrain (official website), it has been modernized several times to improve visitor experience.

The facility is managed by the Mount San Jacinto Winter Park Authority—a California state agency (official website). The tram enhances public access to wilderness areas while promoting appreciation of surrounding landscapes like Chino Canyon (official website) and has received recognition both as a historical civil engineering landmark and as an “Eighth Wonder of the World” (official website).
