The Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF) has unveiled the line-up for its Book to Screen program, which is presented in collaboration with Deadline. This program is a significant feature of the festival, emphasizing the connection between literature and film while encouraging discussions between creators and audiences. Deadline reporters will lead Q&A sessions with directors, screenwriters, and authors who have adapted these literary works for the screen.
This year’s participants include “Conclave” directed by Edward Berger, “Nickel Boys” directed by RaMell Ross, “Queer” with screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, and the North American premiere of “Reading Lolita in Tehran” featuring director Eran Riklis, author Azar Nafisi, and screenwriter Marjorie David.
The schedule includes:
– Saturday, January 4th at 10:00 a.m.: “Conclave,” directed by Edward Berger. The story follows Cardinal Lawrence as he navigates secrets uncovered after the Pope’s death during the election of a new Pope.
– Saturday, January 4th at 4:15 p.m.: The North American Premiere of “Reading Lolita in Tehran.” This adaptation of Azar Nafisi’s memoir involves a professor gathering female students to discuss forbidden Western classics amidst political turmoil. It won awards at the 2024 Rome Film Festival.
– Monday, January 6th at 6:00 p.m.: “Queer,” written by Justin Kuritzkes. Daniel Craig stars in this adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel about a writer’s journey in Mexico.
– Friday, January 10th at 1:30 p.m.: “Nickel Boys,” directed by RaMell Ross. Based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, it tells the story of two Black teenagers at a juvenile reformatory in Florida.
In addition to Books to Screen selections, two Special Presentations will be featured:
– “The Last Showgirl,” directed by Gia Coppola and starring Pamela Anderson.
– “September 5,” focusing on media coverage during the Munich Olympics hostage situation.
– “Unstoppable,” which narrates Anthony Robles’ inspiring life story.
