The City of Palm Springs recently inaugurated Mayor Pro Tem Jeffrey Bernstein as the city’s 25th mayor during a city council meeting. The oath of office was administered by Bernstein’s husband, Dr. Oscar Chamudes.
Mayor Bernstein expressed his pride in leading a city that values diversity, stating, “I’m proud to live in a city that values diversity”. He further highlighted the unique appeal of Palm Springs by saying, “Palm Springs is now a worldwide brand, and truly like no place else”. He also assured his commitment to his new role with the words, “I don’t take this position lightly and will do my best to serve my city well”.
A press release from the City of Palm Springs informs that the mayor position is rotated annually within the city council. In this rotation, Councilmember Ron deHarte has assumed the position of mayor pro tem.
In a Facebook post dated December 17th, Bernstein outlined several significant projects for the city that are expected to reach major milestones over the next 18 months. These include opening three affordable housing complexes and a navigation center; breaking ground on the College of the Desert West Valley Campus; commencing restoration work on the Plaza Theatre; creating Commercial Districts in Palm Springs; upgrading facilities at the convention center and international airport; and celebrating the grand opening of Thompson Hotel.
Bernstein’s professional background is detailed on the City of Palm Springs website. It states that he is the founder and managing partner of Destination PSP, a gift shop situated in downtown Palm Springs. Before establishing this store, he owned a restaurant and nightclub as well as a media consulting business. His career primarily focused on domestic and international pay television business development, programming, and marketing. Furthermore, he has held several elected roles with local business organizations such as Visit Greater Palm Springs, Palm Springs Hospitality Association, and Main Street Palm Springs. Representing District 2, Bernstein was elected to the city council in November of the previous year.
