The pedestrian killed on Sunday morning on North Sunrise Way was identified later that day as 52-year-old George Edward Lammon of Palm Springs, according to News Channel 3 KESQ. Lammon died of his injuries at the scene, as determined by emergency personnel.

In reporting the fatality, the Palm Springs Police Department (PSPD) said on Facebook that the driver was unable to avoid the pedestrian.

“On May 22, at around 4:12 a.m., PSPD dispatch received a call regarding a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in 800 block of North Sunrise Way. Emergency personnel responded to the scene and determined the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries,” police said on Facebook.

Police further reported that the driver, who remained at the scene, explained he was traveling south on North Sunrise Way, south of Tamarisk Road, when he spotted the pedestrian in the roadway and could not stop in time. According to PSPD, there were no signs of drugs and/or alcohol as a factor in the crash.

Although the identity of the victim was not immediately released, that information was provided later that day by the Riverside County Fire Department, which also responded to the scene, KESQ reported.

Any witnesses to this collision are asked to contact the PSPD Traffic Division at 760-323-8125, or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crime Stoppers at 760-347-7867.
