An anonymous donor who gave $2 million to Palm Springs Plaza Theatre’s restoration project is challenging the City of Palm Springs to match that contribution, a report this week by NBC Palm Springs said.

This recent donation of $2 million is good news for the city-owned theater company that needs approximately $10-$12 million for a full restoration that will elevate it to current building codes, the report said. J.R. Roberts, head of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, told the city council this week of the $2 million infusion, which follows a recent donation of $5 million from TV producer David Lee.

Lee had also called for a donation match.

Additionally, these donations follow the City of Palm Springs’ creation of a nonprofit foundation dedicated to fundraising for the theater’s restoration. First built in 1936, the theater has sunk into a state of disrepair, but the City stands behind restoring it to its former glory.

In 1991 the theater was declared a historic site, which bars any architectural changes that deviate from its original design.
