The Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast was held May 11 in Palm Springs, uniting those who support equality and justice in the memory of the late civil rights activist.

“At this morning’s Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast, 72 valley high school students carried the flags of the 72 countries where being gay is still illegal,” according to a tweet by Palm Springs Unified School District (Palm Springs USD). In those countries, gay marriage is prohibited. The breakfast ties in with the program’s purpose of supporting LGBTQ+ youth in a show of solidarity, according to Twitter.

It’s a celebration of the memory of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California. The proceeds from the event directly benefit Coachella Valley youth as they attend Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs and other LGBTQ+ youth programs, visitpalmsprings.com reported.

According to News Channel 3, this year’s Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast was the 10th annual event, returning after two years of pandemic-based cancellations. More than a thousand people attended the event, including 350 kids who are a part of the Safe Schools Desert Cities program, which is a local nonprofit empowering valley LGBTQ+ youth, the article said.
