In June 2024, authorities began investigating reports of several underweight horses found without water in the Cabazon area during extreme heat. On August 14, 2024, Riverside County Animal Services and the Riverside Sheriff’s Rural Crime Team executed a search warrant at the property and seized the horses along with other animals.
Deputy Hubbard from the Sheriff’s Mounted Enforcement Detail noticed one horse in particular and believed it could be rehabilitated with effort and care. “He believed that with hard work and lots of love, he could rehabilitate this horse.” On September 3, 2024, Deputy Hubbard completed the legal process to adopt the horse, naming him Maverick. After nine months of training and building trust, Maverick was prepared to join law enforcement activities.
“Almost one year after his rescue, Maverick is officially a member of the Riverside Sheriff’s Mounted Enforcement Detail, proudly serving the members of our community,” according to officials.
