Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month has kicked off in Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, and Norco, California, with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Jurupa Valley Station urging drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads. In a statement, Deputy James Schwartz emphasized the importance of looking out for motorcycles, stating, “Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so be extra careful before changing lanes.” He further added, “A simple double take could mean the difference between a safe journey and a tragic crash. Motorcycle riders do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do. Let’s all do our part to keep each other safe out there.”
According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 6,218 motorcyclists killed in traffic crashes in 2022. The statistics show that motorcyclists are significantly more vulnerable on the roads, being about 22 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash and four times more likely to be injured.
To promote safety for both drivers and motorcyclists, it is crucial to follow some key tips while on the road. For drivers, being aware of motorcycles, maintaining a safe following distance, and using turn signals effectively are essential. Motorcycle riders are advised to wear protective gear, such as helmets and reflective clothing, and to ride defensively by assuming that other drivers may not see them.
Both drivers and riders are reminded to never drive or ride distracted, as well as to avoid operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The aim is to create a shared responsibility for safety on the roads and ensure that everyone reaches their destination without harm.
