The Riverside County Office of Education (RCOE) has released a new episode of its “LCAP Live!” video series. The new episode highlights teachers of migrant students in the Coachella Valley School District.
In the eastern part of the Coachella Valley, many students return to school late due to the busy summer harvest season across California and Arizona, according to a news release on the Riverside County Office of Education website. Migrant education students account for nearly 10% of total enrollments in the Coachella Valley Unified School District (CVUSD), compared to only 0.7% in Riverside County overall.
Migrant education teachers in CVUSD play a pivotal role in helping these students and families re-integrate into the school system by offering extra support, the release said. Although they are not classified as counselors or traditional teachers, they are instrumental in providing resources like college preparation, tutoring services, and more.
The efforts of CVUSD, with the largest population of migrant students in Riverside County, are highlighted in an episode of the “LCAP Live!” video series, which is designed to show “equity in action” in Riverside County school districts. This episode shows how the district uses its “Local Control and Accountability Plan” (LCAP) to address its community’s specific needs, the release said.
The video series is a product of the RCOE, which annually supports the county’s 23 school districts in creating and reviewing LCAP plans. The RCOE aims to identify and publicize effective and equitable educational initiatives to provide exemplary models of LCAP plans.
The RCOE, run by a superintendent and staff, was founded in 1893. It aims to provide support and prepare students and to maintain quality and fiscal solvency across the county’s school districts, its website says.
