The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has announced a DUI checkpoint will take place in Indian Wells on December 5, 2025. The checkpoint, organized by the Palm Desert Sheriff’s Station, will run from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city.

Deputy Michael Scott emphasized the importance of making safe choices during the holiday season. “Impaired driving is preventable,” Deputy Scott said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”

Authorities are reminding drivers that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from certain prescription and over-the-counter medications. They advise following directions for use and reading warning labels about driving. Although marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in California, it remains illegal to drive under its influence.

Those found driving impaired may face significant consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties for a first-time DUI offense and license suspension.

The checkpoint program is funded through a grant from the Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program via the California Highway Patrol.
