As the holiday season nears, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to make safe choices by using a designated driver, public transportation, or rideshare services to avoid impaired driving. The department highlights that about 34 people die each day in drunk-driving crashes across the United States, which equates to one person every 42 minutes.
From December 1 through December 9, additional officers will be on patrol in Indian Wells, Rancho Mirage, and Palm Desert to look for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Our priority is keeping the community safe this holiday season,” said Deputy Ralph Leal. “If you’re heading out to celebrate, don’t risk it. Plan ahead for a safe drive with a designated driver or by arranging alternative transportation.”
Drunk driving remains a leading cause of fatal traffic accidents nationwide during the holidays. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, between December 2019 and December 2023, there were 4,931 deaths from alcohol-impaired crashes during those months. In California alone, 1,355 people died in such incidents in 2023.
The Sheriff’s Office also reminds residents that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances. Anyone taking medication with warnings against operating vehicles should let someone else drive. The public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they see someone who appears impaired behind the wheel.
This safety initiative is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
