The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is increasing its patrols during the holiday season as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. The initiative, which runs from December 12 through New Year’s Day, aims to reduce impaired driving and keep roads safe.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,038 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes across the United States in December 2023. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents about the risks of driving under the influence and urging them to make responsible choices during holiday celebrations.
“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” said Deputy Michael Hinkle. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable. We are asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and everyone on the roads safe.”
The department advises people who plan to drink or use substances that may impair their ability to drive—including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other drugs—to arrange for a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a taxi or rideshare service. They also encourage reporting suspected impaired drivers by calling 9-1-1.
Funding for this enforcement effort comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
