The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is participating in the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign, which begins on December 12 and runs through New Year’s Day. This initiative aims to reduce impaired driving during the holiday season by increasing patrols and stopping suspected impaired drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,038 people died in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes across the United States in December 2023. The Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents about the dangers of driving under the influence and urging them to make responsible choices.
“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” said Deputy Jeremiah Shields. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable. We are asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and everyone on the roads safe.”
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead if they intend to drink, designating a sober driver or using public transit, taxis, or rideshare services. The department also notes that impairment can result from not just alcohol but prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances. Those taking medication with a warning label against operating vehicles should arrange for alternative transportation.
Anyone who sees a driver they suspect is impaired is asked to call 9-1-1.
The program receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
