Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in Jurupa Valley will conduct a DUI saturation patrol between Friday and Saturday, August 22–23. The operation will run from 6:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., focusing on identifying drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” said Deputy Kenneth Shinn. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption. Certain prescription and over-the-counter medications can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The public is advised to follow medication instructions and heed warning labels related to driving. Although both medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, it remains illegal to drive while under its influence.
According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, those convicted of a first-time DUI may face fines and penalties averaging $13,500 and could have their license suspended.
Funding for this enforcement effort comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
