The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office will conduct DUI patrols in Palm Desert on Friday, August 22, from 4:00 p.m. to midnight. The operation aims to identify and stop drivers suspected of driving under the influence.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” said Deputy Ralph Leal. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or consuming drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
Officials emphasize that impaired driving can result not only from alcohol but also from certain prescription and over-the-counter medications. Drivers are advised to follow instructions for use and pay attention to warning labels regarding operating vehicles. Although marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational purposes in California, it remains illegal to drive under its influence.
Those arrested for a first-time DUI offense may face about $13,500 in fines and penalties and could have their license suspended.
Funding for the enforcement effort comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
