On September 12, 2025, the Thermal Sheriff’s Station and La Quinta Traffic Team carried out an enforcement operation in La Quinta targeting drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The operation took place from 2:00 p.m. to midnight.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office issued a reminder that impaired driving is not limited to alcohol use. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. The office advised motorists to follow usage directions and read warning labels related to operating vehicles or heavy machinery. It also noted that while marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational purposes, it remains illegal to drive under its influence.

The agency encouraged those who plan on drinking or taking medications that could impair their driving ability to stay at home instead of getting behind the wheel.

According to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, drivers charged with DUI may face average fines and penalties totaling $13,500 and risk having their license suspended.

Funding for this operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The public is reminded: “Report Drunk Drivers – Call 9–1–1.”
