The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office in Palm Desert is encouraging families and students to participate in National Walk and Roll to School Day on October 8. The event aims to promote exercise and raise awareness about the need for safe, accessible routes for walking and biking to school.
“National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” said Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jason Sexton. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”
On October 8, officials expect increased foot and bike traffic around schools. Drivers are reminded to stay alert, be prepared to stop for school buses or children crossing the street, and reduce speed in school zones.
The Sheriff’s Office also encourages schools to register their participation at walkbiketoschool.org as a way of tracking involvement and supporting active transportation.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
