The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is urging families and students to participate in National Walk and Roll to School Day on October 8. The event aims to promote exercise and raise awareness about the importance of safe routes for walking and biking to school.
“National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” said Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Michael Hinkle. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”
The Sheriff’s Office advises drivers to be extra cautious on October 8 due to an expected increase in foot and bike traffic near schools. Drivers are reminded to watch for school buses, children crossing streets, and to reduce speed in school zones. The office also provides safety tips for students who walk, bike, or use other means to get to school.
Schools are encouraged to register their participation at walkbiketoschool.org as a way to track involvement and support active transportation options.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
