National Walk and Roll to School Day will take place on October 8, with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office encouraging families and students in La Quinta and Coachella to participate. The event aims to promote exercise among children and highlight the need for safe walking and biking routes to schools.
“National Walk and Roll to School Day is a great opportunity to highlight pedestrian safety and advocate for safer routes for walking and biking to school,” said Sgt. Yamaguchi of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office. “This day underscores the importance of boosting physical activity and prioritizes the safety of the families in our community.”
The sheriff’s office reminds drivers that extra caution is needed on October 8 due to increased foot and bike traffic, but emphasizes that alertness should be maintained every day. Drivers are urged to slow down in school zones, watch for children crossing streets, and be prepared to stop for school buses.
To further support safe travel, the sheriff’s office has provided tips for students who walk, bike, or roll to school. Schools are also encouraged to register their participation at walkbiketoschool.org as a way of tracking involvement and showing support for active transportation.
Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
