As the holiday season nears, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is urging drivers to make safe choices and avoid impaired driving. Officials are asking residents to use a designated driver, public transportation, taxis, or rideshare services if they plan to consume alcohol or take substances that may impair their ability to drive.
According to national data, about 34 people die each day in the United States due to drunk-driving crashes, which averages out to one person every 42 minutes. Deputy Jason Slover stated, “Our priority is keeping the community safe this holiday season. If you’re heading out to celebrate, don’t risk it. Plan ahead for a safe drive with a designated driver or by arranging alternative transportation.”
Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that during December months from 2019 through 2023, there were 4,931 fatalities nationwide resulting from alcohol-impaired crashes. In California alone, 1,355 people died in such incidents in 2023.
The sheriff’s office also notes that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products and other substances. Residents are reminded that if their medication has a driving warning label or if they have consumed any substance that could impair them, they should let someone else drive. The public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they see someone who appears impaired behind the wheel.
Funding for these traffic safety efforts comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
