The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents on March 30 to avoid driving under the influence of drugs as April 20, also known as 4/20, approaches. The department said that while marijuana use is legal in California for both recreational and medicinal purposes, driving while impaired remains illegal and dangerous.
This warning comes as authorities aim to reduce drug-impaired traffic incidents during upcoming festivities. Driving under the influence of marijuana or other substances can lead to serious consequences for drivers, passengers, and others on the road.
“Whether it is on 4/20 or any other day, it is unsafe and illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana,” Deputy Cameron Alvarez said. “If you plan to consume marijuana or any impairing substance, make a plan to get home safely with a sober ride home.”
According to the Transportation Injury Mapping System, there were 573 fatalities in California from drug-related traffic crashes in 2023. The sheriff’s office reports that drugs such as marijuana can slow reaction times, reduce coordination, increase aggressive behavior, impair cognitive functions, and cause drowsiness—all factors that raise the risk of serious crashes.
To promote safety during celebrations like those expected on April 20 in Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, and Norco areas of Riverside County, officials recommend designating a sober driver before going out. They also encourage using ridesharing services or public transportation if necessary and looking out for friends or family who may be impaired by taking their keys and arranging safe rides.
Residents are advised to call emergency services if they see an impaired driver on the road. For more information about this advisory or media inquiries regarding this incident please contact the Media Information Bureau.
