The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to celebrate the holiday season responsibly and avoid driving under the influence. The warning comes as part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement campaign, which begins December 12.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, alcohol-impaired-driving crashes claimed 1,038 lives in the United States in December 2023.
“We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so that they can celebrate the holiday season with their families and loved ones,” said Deputy Tyler Dix. “Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable. We are asking everyone to do their part to keep themselves and everyone on the roads safe.”
The sheriff’s office recommends that people who plan to drink should either stay in for the night or arrange for a sober driver, use public transportation, or call a taxi or rideshare service. They also remind drivers that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances.
Those taking medication with warnings against operating vehicles are advised to let someone else drive. The public is encouraged to call 9-1-1 if they observe anyone who appears to be driving while impaired.
