The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Desert Station, will conduct DUI patrols in Rancho Mirage on Friday, August 8th. The operation is scheduled to run from 4:00 p.m. to midnight and aims to identify drivers suspected of driving under the influence.

Deputy Paul Abrego stated, “Impaired driving is preventable. It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or consuming drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”

The department emphasizes that impairment is not limited to alcohol consumption. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Residents are advised to follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving after taking such substances. While marijuana use is legal for both medicinal and recreational purposes in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.

A first-time DUI conviction can result in fines and penalties averaging $13,500, along with a suspended license.

Funding for this enforcement effort comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
