On May 24, 2024, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is set to conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint. The operation will take place from 7pm to 1am at an undisclosed location in the city of Temecula. The selection of DUI checkpoint locations is data-driven, based on areas with a high incidence of impaired driving-related crashes.

The primary objective of these checkpoints is to enhance public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from the roads. Corporal Downs stated, “Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk. Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reminder to the public that impairment can result not only from alcohol but also from certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs which may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal substances, driving under their influence remains illegal.

Drivers found guilty of a first-time DUI offense can expect to face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

This program has been made possible through funding provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
