The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office, Jurupa Valley Station, is urging residents of Eastvale, Jurupa Valley, and Norco, California to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly. They advise planning ahead by designating a sober driver or using public transportation, ride-sharing services, or taxis. From July 1 through July 6, additional deputies will be on patrol to identify drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

In 2023, there were 617 fatalities in crashes across the U.S. during the Fourth of July holiday period. Alcohol was involved in 38% of these incidents. In California alone, 29 people died in crashes while California Highway Patrol officers made over 1,300 arrests for driving under the influence during last year’s Independence Day celebrations.

“Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road,” Deputy Jason Buenrostro stated. “Drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable. We’re asking everyone to think of your loved ones, friends and family before getting behind the wheel. Make a plan to get home safely.”

Impairment is not limited to alcohol; prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances may also cause impairment. If you plan to consume any such substances with a driving warning label, ensure someone sober drives.

Funding for this program comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
