The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office Lake Elsinore Station is urging residents to celebrate the Fourth of July responsibly. Officials recommend planning ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or opting for ride-sharing services. This initiative aims to reduce incidents of impaired driving during the holiday period from July 1 to July 6.

In 2023, there were 617 fatalities in crashes across the United States during the Fourth of July holiday. Alcohol was involved in 38% of these deadly incidents. In California alone, 29 people lost their lives in crashes, and over 1,300 arrests were made for driving under the influence.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Deputy Keyser emphasized the importance of making responsible choices: “Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road,” he said. He further noted that “drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable” and urged everyone to consider their loved ones before deciding to drive under the influence.

The warning extends beyond alcohol consumption; prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances can also impair driving ability. Those planning to consume such substances are advised to arrange for a sober driver.

This safety program receives funding from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
