Ron Nyswaner to receive star on Palm Springs Walk of Fame

The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce will honor screenwriter and producer Ron Nyswaner with the 470th star on the Palm Springs Walk of the Stars in the category of Entertainment. The ceremony is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 1301 N. Palm Canyon Dr.

Invited guests include Robbie Rogers, Executive Producer, and Jelani Alladin, star of Fellow Travelers. A private reception hosted by Eight4Nine Restaurant will follow immediately after the ceremony.

“We are immensely excited to be a part of honoring Ron Nyswaner for his work in not only entertainment but for his longtime activism for the LGBTQ+ community,” said Palm Springs Chamber CEO Nona Watson.

Nyswaner is an Academy Award-nominated writer and producer best known for the film Philadelphia, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. His career includes nominations for various prestigious awards such as the Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Primetime Emmy Award, Golden Globe, Independent Spirit Award; he has also received accolades like the National Board of Review’s Best Adapted Screenplay Award and GLAAD’s Best Screenplay Award. This year he was honored with the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guilds of America Awards.

His body of work spans feature films, television series, and documentaries including My Policeman, Murder on Middle Beach, Smithereens, Mrs. Soffel, Soldier’s Girl, The Painted Veil; he has also contributed to acclaimed series such as Ray Donovan and Homeland. He authored Blue Days Black Nights: A Memoir of Desire and produced and directed She’s the Best Thing in It which premiered at SXSW Film Festival in 2015.

Recently, Nyswaner created and produced Fellow Travelers—a Peabody Award-winning limited series starring Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey—which was highly reviewed this year. Based on Thomas Mallon’s novel, it explores a volatile romance set against historical events from McCarthyism to the AIDS crisis. The series has been recognized by GLAAD and other organizations while being nominated for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards.

Nyswaner’s work often addresses social and political issues with a focus on LGBTQ+ themes. He has been credited with bringing discussions about HIV/AIDS into mainstream media. His activism has earned him several honors including a Steve Chase Humanitarian Award and Los Angeles LGBT Center’s Vanguard Award.
