The Designated Emphasis in Speculative Fictions & Cultures of Science at UC Riverside enables doctoral students across departments to specialize in research related to science fiction, fantasy, fan cultures, and science and technology studies. We’ll hear from scholars at different stages in their progress toward the Ph.D. as they explore topics including: techno-orientalism and “Yellow Peril,” climate fiction and Indigenous futurisms, fandom and furry subculture, Afro-horror and Black speculation… these literatures, art forms, and knowledge practices make for exciting conversations and diverse academic careers!
