The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has issued a reminder for the public to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday responsibly. Officials are urging individuals to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transportation or ride-sharing services, or calling a cab. From June 30 through July 6, additional officers will be on patrol to identify drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Statistics from 2023 show that 617 people were killed in crashes across the United States during the Fourth of July holiday period, with alcohol involved in 38% of those incidents. In California alone, 29 fatalities occurred in crashes during this time, and California Highway Patrol officers made over 1,300 arrests for driving under the influence.

Captain Jason Sexton emphasized the importance of planning ahead: “Designating a sober driver is a simple choice that can save your life and the lives of others on the road,” he stated. He further noted that “drunk driving is one hundred percent preventable” and urged everyone to consider their loved ones before getting behind the wheel.

The issue of impaired driving extends beyond alcohol consumption. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and other substances can also lead to impairment. Individuals who plan to consume such substances should ensure someone sober takes responsibility for driving.

Funding for this initiative comes from a grant provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
